In 2012, a player named BarryMode completed Spelunky Classic in two minutes and 30 seconds. Since then, this time has been the world record, and no other speedrunner has come close. Now, BarryMode’s speed has been revealed as fraudulent.
In a report on Vice, BarryMode apologized “for that deception.” The speedrun has since been removed from its YouTube channel.

In short, BarryMode seems to have used a mode for Spelunky that allows you to repeatedly play the same levels over and over again. Usually Spelunky worlds are randomly generated after each death, and dealing with that unpredictability is part of the challenge for the series speedrunners. Being able to repeat a level allows you to plan the shortest route for each exit and more easily avoid traps and enemies.
The deception was found in part because of a single block that appeared to be missing from one of the score screens between levels, which are not normally changing levels. The block is an item added by the way.
As a result, the holder of the real-world record for most of the past eight years was to be ExplodingCabbage speedrunner, who posted two minutes and 53 seconds Spelunky speedrun in July 2010. Last month, Another speedrunner called Groomp won at the time and is now the current world record holder, with a time of two minutes and 40 seconds.
